Airport History

Ralph Wenz Field Airport located in Pinedale, Wyoming is similar to many airports around the country named after notable aviators, but you may be asking who is Ralph Wenz? Our local airport’s name is rooted in the story about a B-24 Liberator that crashed in the Alaska Wilderness, now known as Yukon-Charlie Rivers National Preserve. Four American Heroes lost their lives in the crash on December 23, 1943, including the airport’s namesake S. Sgt. Ralph S. Wenz. The following article summarizes their journey.
